William Stanley Merwin liked being called "WS" instead of William. He was born in New York in 1927. Spent younger days in New Jersey, then Pennsylvania.
He began developing his writing skills at about 5 years old. His first work was not the usual for writers. He also took an early interest in nature.
FROM VERSES TO A PALM TREE GARDEN
WS received two Pulitzer Prizes for his poetry. And became the U.S. Poet Laureate in 2010. Over the years he earned many more accolades.
His interesting transition occurred in 1976 with a Move to Maui Hawaii. It's an inspirational story to all those who love being amidst the palms.
